New7Wonders European World Tour Ends With a Bang After Visiting Eight Finalists

World Tour Launches in Athens,
Declaration in Lisbon, Portugal

After successful visits to the Acropolis, the Hagia Sophia, the Kremlin and St Basil's Cathedral, the Colosseum, Neuschwanstein Castle and Stonehenge, the European leg of the World Tour ended at the Alhambra on Oct. 24. From the launch on, as the New7Wonders hot-air balloon rose in the pale light of an Athenian dawn to mark the start of the Tour at the ancient Acropolis, there were many incredible moments and meetings with fascinating people. We met historians, politicians, actors, museum curators, Bavarian dancers and singers and, in Stonehenge, real druids with long beards and flowing, white robes!

World Tour - Day 7 - October 17, 2006

Watching the New7Wonders airship soaring through the European sky one last time as it gracefully flew above and around the Alhambra, the N7W team reflected on how well it had all gone. For one, despite bad forecasts and lots of rain the days before our events, we always had great weather!

See the exciting photos and read all about the World Tour online at www.new7wonders.com/worldtour. We head to Asia next, with the first stop being the Great Wall of China on Nov. 7. Next year, we will be in Africa, the Middle East and South and North America. As you know, the finale will be the Official Declaration of New 7 Wonders of the World on
July 7, 2007 鈥?07.07.07 in Lisbon!

Of course, lots of funny and remarkable things also happened during our jaunt through Europe, such as an odd ice-cream experience in Istanbul and help from most unexpected sources in Moscow鈥攔ead about them in the behind-the-scenes Founder鈥檚 Blog!

An airship has flown over Stonehenge to celebrate the 5,000-year-old landmark's inclusion on a shortlist to decide the seven wonders of the modern world. Fifty robed druids performed a ceremony inside the circle to mark the event.

Stonehenge, the only British entry, is up against iconic buildings and structures ranging from the Statue of Liberty to the Great Wall of China. The global poll is being organised by the Swiss-based group New7Wonders. The winners will be announced in July 2007.

Good chance
The New7Wonders winner will be chosen by the public. Bernard Weber, New7Wonders founder, said: "I think it (Stonehenge) has great potential because of its simplicity. It's like a mirror for humanity." "I think it should win simply because it's prehistoric", said Dave Batchelor, of Stonehenge. "Stonehenge's beauty is also its environment which, if the roads were not here, would be even better. I think it has a good chance." Stonehenge, on Salisbury Plain in Wiltshire, is one of 21 finalists.
